Scooter the hamster passed away early yesterday morning, possibly from old age. I was pretty bummed out. I hadn't slept. I went to bed feeling glum. A few hours later, Richard walked into the bedroom holding Scooter's cage...and racing around inside it are two fluffy wee hamsters! I couldn't have been happier. And I know this was a selfless thing for Richard to do, because he thinks he might be slightly allergic to these little guys.
As you can see in the picture below, the hamsters look identical and are siblings. I can only tell them apart by a spot on Butters' back. They're a bit too young for me to determine the sex, but I suspect Tweak is a female and Butters is a male (uh-oh). Strangely, Butters is the laid-back one and the homemaker. Today he scurried around the cage picking up all the food and transporting it into their little igloo, then made a cozy nest. Meanwhile, Tweak clung to the top of the cage and gnawed at the bars. Later she fought Butters for control of the wheel, sticking her nose into the cross-bars or clamboring all over him to make him stop running. They're both getting comfortable with us, and don't bite anymore (Butters finally realized we aren't edible).
