It seems a lot of people are looking for this book: The Great Escape or The Sewer Story by Peter J. Lippman. It was written in the '70s and tells the tale of some pet baby alligators who end up in the sewer, but esape the NYC sewer system and journey home to Florida by - I am told - hijacking an airplane.

Oh my gosh! That's it! :) And I even recall a line, "Excuse me Madam but you're standing on my foot" which was said during a subway ride.

Polite hijacking alligators. Cool.

Shouldn't the Dept. of Homeland Security be tracking down all copies of this book. Might give youthful terrorists to be ideas, you know!

Whoa, maybe THAT's why it's so hard to find... :)

Hugh: It's funny you remember that line "Excuse me Madam but you're standing on my foot", 'cause one my fave goofy lines from a book is "Excuse me Madam but I thought you were a trout stream" from Richard Brautigan's "Trout Fishing in America. I use that line a lot when something strikes me as totally bizarre, like the end of Mulholland Drive. (which I do understand now, by the way, after much study and thought - but of course it's still BIZARRE.)
