Aaron has gone home and it's just Demi here now. It's strange not to have a second computer hooked up smack in the center of the living room anymore!
We saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this afternoon, after stocking up on hedgehogs at the nearest Purdy's. The movie wasn't bad. It was a little more faithful to the book than the original movie - Prince Pondicherry and his melting palace make an appearance. But overall this one didn't have the punch of the original. No Oscar Wilde quotes or Blake poetry, no super-freaky boat ride, and - it pains me to even write this - a rather generic Veruca. The uber-competitive Violet is actually the most obnoxious child in this film. I was, as usual, unimpressed by Johny Depp. His was an utterly generic Willy Wonka who reminded me of Michael Jackson more than anyone else. But the resemblance helps give the film a moral backbone lacking in the original; the lesson is you have to grow up at least enough to have consideration for the feelings and needs of other people. You can be a little childish forever -that's great - but you really shouldn't be a child forever like good ol' Mr. Jackson.
Of course the effects in this movie were groovy, with a Gothic edge. The Oompa-Loompas (or should I saw Oompa-Loompa) looked cool, though I couldn't understand more than a few words from each song. The parents were quite generic, but Grandpa Joe seemed perfect. In short, there were a few hits and a lot of misses.
I'm looking forward to Corpse Bride.

The parents are supposed to be generic.
Not Charlie's parents, the bratty kids' parents. They were a lot more interesting in the first movie; really obnoxious.
BTW, what are hedgehogs?
We're watching the Darger movie right now. What a tragic life!
Hooray, you didn't miss it! Pretty sad, huh? It's almost a miracle he had his knack for art to get him through life.
Hedgehogs are little chocolate hedgehogs with hazelnut filling. Yuuummmmm.
I spose hedgehogs are made in China too?
Poor Darger only had 1 person to love him his whole life. How sad!
Just think how far he could have gone with his art and writing if he'd had someone to love and encourage him!
gee, we liked this version way more than the original... funny how everyone has different tastes (okay, i admit to liking my humor on the dark side)
Demi liked the new movie more, too. :)
I'm pretty sure hedgehogs aren't Chinese. Belgian, maybe?
