Friday

Celebrations are in order: Demi's attachment to the frog cup seems to be waning! The straw finally ruptured a couple days ago. Cream soda everywhere. It was not pretty.

It's raining sporadically so I don't think we'll be spending much time outside as we have all week. Probably a good day for boardgames and soup.

Anyway, I went to The Ballad of Jack and Rose last Monday and it was a fine film, but creepy. Daniel Day-Lewis plays a dying hippie who lives alone on an island with his teenage daughter; he was once the leader of a commune, but everyone has long since abandoned the project. The daughter, Rose, has never been to school and her life basically revolves around gardening and looking after her father, to whom she develops a really unhealthy attachment. Jack makes the monumental mistake of inviting his secret girlfriend from the mainland to live with him, bringing her two teen sons, and overnight Rose is planning "revenge" on him and attempting to kill the poor girlfriend. Meanwhile, a suburban-style development on the far side of the island is pissing off Jack and he stalks the island waving a rifle Weibo-Ludwig style in a vain attempt to preserve the island's wetland. He has spent a huge chunk of his life trying to maintain a state of innocence and purity on his island - and instead he's created a monster. Instead of being uncontaminated by society, Rose is just plain warped. It's the end of a life and the end of a dream.
I won't give away the ending - but believe me, it's happier than you might expect.

We rented movies a couple of days ago. We've watched Meet the Fockers and White Noise; Birth and The Life and Death of Peter Sellers left to go. I can't recommend White Noise.
