The conclusion of Never Let Me Go...

SPOILER

Hailsham and a handful of other schools were a groundbreaking experiment in treating donor students as actual human beings. It failed. People preferred not to deal with the fact that their walking organ banks had emotions, souls, etc., and Hailsham was forced to shut down.
Madame and Miss Emily, the school's founders, didn't particularly care about the kids as individuals (they were terrified of them and repulsed by them, just like everyone else), but felt they deserved some dignity and a chance to express themselves creatively. Madame's gallery of student artwork was an effort to force society to accept that her students were real people.

Never Let Me Go has been shortlisted for the 2005 Booker prize.

Well, I guess I won't have to read it now; will I?
