Since Broadway doesn't make much sense anyway, I think the common man should take some initiative and try to get his/her own shows produced. I came up with the (horrible) idea of a musical Streetcar long before either Andre Previn or The Simpsons did. And two of my favourite movies - Hairspray and The Producers - became hit musicals, so why shouldn't I have a say? Here are a few of my ideas of what should be on Broadway, or reasonably close to it, in the near future...
Hairy: This will be a lot like Rent. A group of quirky friends live semi-communally as they navigate life's choppy waters. Only they're 50something hippies, so instead of facing unemployment and STDs, they're facing equally tragic things like Bob Dylan's imminent retirement, indigestion, the dearth of organic veggies in their neighborhood bistros, and the difficulties of fitting knitting class and yoga into the same afternoon when arthritis is flaring up.
Necronomicon, the Musical: In which the demented world of H.P. Lovecraft comes to life through song, dance, and giant squishy things that are either animatronic or played by people wearing sneakers, kinda like Lion King. You know, for kids.
And in the tradition of Victorian and Edwardian thrillers being dusted off and morphed into musical extravaganzas (Phantom of the Opera, The Woman in White, etc.), how about The Turn of the Screw with the haunting theme song, "Is Everybody Here Frickin' Crazy Except For Me?"

I'd like two tickets to 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' as performed by the Nashville Community Players...with their haunting theme songs: "Watson in it for me?"..and "Sher..lock me outa Your Heart"
Oh lord;... Really Sorry for this...sort of.....
Have you ever seen The Tall Guy with Jeff Goldblum? It's the first thing Richard Curtis wrote(4 weddings and a funeral, notting hill). It's about this tall american working as an actor in London, with Rowan Atkinson nonetheless, and he becomes the lead in Elephant! The Musical- about the Elephant Man. Hysterical in 1991; not as funny now because it's not as far fetched; but the producer in the film wants to do Tricky Dick, the musical of richard the third with the title song being I've Got A Hunch I'm Gonna Be King. Worth a rental. I own it :)
RJ, those sound like Monty Python material. ;)
I thought of Hound of the Baskervilles, but couldn't come up with any songs! "Sher...lock Me Outta Your Heart" would be a hit!!
I don't think I've even heard of "The Tall Guy", but it sounds hilarious.
"Watson in it for me" -- I love it!
I love the idea for Hairy - that would totally be a big hit! Oh, the arthritis pain! I can just hear the music!
Great post, RJ!
SME: I am so embarassed. For some reason, I thought I was commenting on Red Jane's blog, which is why I addressed the last comment to RJ. Very sorry!
I'm tired. It's the first day of my weekend. My brain is mush. Again - apologies.
Easy mistake - we have the same template. Get some R&R! :)
