When an otherwise respectable person is in the grips of some crippling addiction, I try to reserve judgement and wish him the best. History shows that even the worst, falling-down, soiling-himself junkie or drunk can pick himself up and get on with a clean, productive life. I say addicts need lots of support, lots of patience, and a little sympathy.
Screw that.
I stood up for Mel Gibson when people said his boring, gory, and rather ridiculous crucifixion movie was anti-Semitic. I even chalked up his refusal to address his father's Holocaust denial as an admirable respect for his elders. I watched that retarded movie in which he could read women's thoughts (granted, only because it was on TV and it was a slow night). I even considered watching his movie about Mayan human sacrifice, even though I suspect it's just a sick and sad effort to make dark people look like savages in need of Gibson's brand of lunatic, so-far-right-it's-no-longer-visible religion.
No more. He can take his anti-Semitic paranoia, his psychotic religious b.s., and his umpteen children and go the @#$&*@ back to Oz. We have enough of our own abusive drunken egomaniacs in North America, thanks. Just go home, live in the outback with your delusional old Nazi dad, and play with the rabbits or whatever the hell you do over there. Go make some more porn with Piper Laurie. Do whatever you want. Just don't come over here, endanger people on U.S. roads because you feel like it and because you have a "problem" that you haven't bothered to face for 40-odd years, and pretend you own the place just because you've made a bunch of shitty movies. Scram.

Its one of the great ills of our society, drinking and driving, Any one who gets behind the wheel drunk is a dirt bag in my estimation. but yet corporations and government continue to cast a blind eye to societies problems with heavy drinking. Advertisers encourage us with slick advertising that its cool to get wasted," Hey! I found six Canadian" lets get wasted! Check out the web site MADD Online
The most overpaid actor in history can afford to dry out in style. Get thee to rehab.
I didn't know what the hell you were talking about, until I saw the news this morning.
Mel just slid down another rung on my ladder! *sigh*
Why is everyone reacting so strongly to this?
Drunk driving makes me mad, period, and I get upset when self-righteous celebrities or politicians think they can do whatever they want. That's what made me mad at first, then I found out about the anti-Jewish stuff he was saying when drunk (allegedly) and remembered how he blew off accusations that The Passion was extremely anti-Jewish (which it was), and that made me FURIOUS!! And I admit it drives me nuts when people come to America or Canada, make a name for themselves, then figure they can do whatever they want. It's bad enough to be an obnoxious drunken idiot in your country of origin, but to come 1000s of miles just to endanger people in another country and be an obnoxious drunken idiot is just wrong!!
That's why I'm making a big deal out of it. I can't speak for anyone else. I think people just like to see movie stars get in trouble, whether they're obnoxious or not. (In a few months he'll probably be in the black again, anyway; he was arrested for a DUI in Canada back in the '80s, and that didn't stick.)
It seems to me that he actually IS American. His family lived in Australia while he was growing up.
OK, he was born here. But his dad moved back to Australia because the U.S. was too wicked.
A-men to that. He is eight kinds of crazy. They say it was "just the alcohol talking" but people don't say things under the influence that aren't already running around in their heads. Alcohol makes you less inhibited and, therefore, more likely to say what you really think.
Nancy: I think it's because he touts himself as some messenger for Morality and for Christ by making his epic Passion movie. We (the public) defended him when allegations of anti-semitism were thrown towards that movie and to him, because of his dad. But when someone in a drunken rant starts spouting off about the F'n Jews and calls a female police officer "Sugartits" all bets are off for me.
He's nothing but another hollywood hypocrite.
YES. The booze talks, but it only says what's already on your mind. ;D
Never liked him. Thought Braveheart was absolute tripe. Don't understand what women see in him. Enough said.
Ditto!
Dangit. That was me.
