A Kick*** Tuesday

Or, "Midgets, Gore, and Flavor-Aid"

It just so happened that Sophie decided 5 AM would be a fine time to play with her toy tamborine. And it just so happened that I decided to turn on the tube since I was awake. And it just so happened that I came across PBS and it just so happened that American Experience was running the Jonestown documentary that's been on my must-see list in the sidebar for quite some time! I couldn't find it anywhere on DVD, but I stumbled across it five minutes after it started and recorded it. I love it when stuff like that happens. Meanwhile, Pavlov's rabbit heard the food bag crinkling and already had her nose in her bowl; I always have to wrestle her out of the way to put her pellets in it. ;D

Jonestown: The Life and Death of the People's Temple is a beautifully balanced look at the cult. Many documentaries about cults zero in on the quirks and horrors of the final days, rather than examining the halcyion periods and positive attributes that suck people into them in the first place. Jonestown was just a hideout for a paranoid tyrant, but through the interviews with former members you can understand why they felt they were buying into a socialist utopian ideal. Very sad stuff; a glimpse into our past and a warning for our future, especially for people my age, who can't recall the shock of this event and may consider Heaven's Gate to be the cult tragedy of the last century.

Later in the day, Richard went to HMV while I was picking up my monthly supply of Midol and chocolate and picked up a DVD that looked strangely familiar. Could it be...? Was it....? The second season of TWIN PEAKS?! Did they finally, at long last, release it? Yep. But the first season is out of print, so anyone wanting to buy both is now screwed. Lame. As if it wasn't bad enough having to settle for a bootleg copy of a bootleg copy of Eraserhead for all those years.

And tonight is cheap Tuesday at the theatre, so we're gonna take in Grindhouse (see Laura's review of it over at The Sarchasm, and/or the Village Voice's funny article on it).

Oh, and we finally know who the baby daddy is (tho I couldnt' care less).

Life is good.

Did you apologize to Sophie for being grumpy with her? She's psychic you know. ;)

Not ALL bunnies are psychic. It's like the Easter bunny thing - only one of them out of every 100 or so gets the honor. But I will apologize, just in case she's secretly a killer rabbit. ;)

Sophie's better than TiVo!

I remember the news reports coming across about Jones Town. It blew me away - I cried and wondered how such a thing could happen. Being older and wiser I have my theories. You gotta the cutest bunny...actually I think she might have some human genes.

Sophie's definitely better than TiVo, especially when she's in a cuddly mood, like today. She's moodier than any human I've ever met, that's for sure. :)
