My Summer Survival Recipe

1. Run appliances only after dark. Sure, it feels weird doing laundry at midnight, but would I rather have the dryer adding to my misery at noon?
2. Tell myself, "Yes, it's hot, but you can handle it! The rabbit needs that fan more than you do! Remember, Sophie doesn't have the option of running to an air-conditioned cafe when life gets unbearable."
3. Drink about 70 gallons of Strawberry-Kiwi or Kiwi-Watermelon Crystal Light per week.
4. Leave the lights, TV, and computers off as much as possible. If really necessary, watch Eraserhead on the portable DVD player (with the lights off, of course).
5. Sit on the floor. Nice, cool concrete...and Sophie appreciates the company.
6. Subsist on salads, still-frozen peas, and/or microwaved burritos.
7. When the craving for a Tim Horton's iced capp becomes intense, walk the extra block to Second Cup instead and get one made with soy milk.
8. If all else fails, flee to the nearest public wading pool and thank God for municipally funded foot-soaking oases.
9. Remind myself that this is Canada. Winter can last nine months, and it's just around the corner.

You can also spend inordinate amounts of time in malls. That's how I survived Ottawa summers, which are the absolute WORST. I also recommend cool baths and/or showers.

Ahhh yes, cool baths are the best. And malls are another godsend...I'm not much of a mallrat until it gets hot, then I can spend hours there. The best thing to do in Edmonton on a super-hot day is go out to the big mall and walk for miles in air-conditioned splendor.

Wait a minute... You have a Second Cup??? OMG - it must be one of the very few here in the West! I loved SC when I lived in Ottawa and kinda miss it now! I know there was one in Nanaimo, and there used to be one in Pacific Centre in Vancouver, but other than that, nada! I am so jealous!

Oh wow, I wish I could package one up and send it to you! Seriously, there's practically one on every block in Edmonton. There were two within walking distance of our apartment, and around our condo there must be at least half a dozen. (There are nearly as many Starbucks, but their soy lattes are nnnaaasstty.)

Never heard of Second Cup but we have a Starbucks basically up the street from us by the mall. I loved your list though. You are right about giving Sophie the fan. LOL.. She is so cute though.

OK, I just went to the Second Cup web site and found that there are 3 locations in Vancouver, one in Kelowna, and one in Kamloops. But still...

That's a cute top!
You need one of those new, spacesaver fans. Then both you and Sophie could feel the breeze.
Maybe D could spritz you too? ;)

Southdale Mall was the ONLY way we survived summmers, when we lived in the Cities!

It's only 64F today....PERFECT!

It rained last night, the first drop for nearly a month, the rain is continuing and we in NSW hope it keeps raining, our combined water storage levels are at about 18%-dangerously low.
It is winter here, yesterdays midday temp 23 cel.at 7am 12 cel. right now 16 cel. I also have a stinking cold. Say hallo to Sophie, oh BTW your purple pussy is pretty too.

Get some peppermint bodywash - that, with a cool shower really cools you down. I used to prefer Lush's "Freeze" shower gel, but they discontinued it.

Sounds awful. We have our lovely heatwave coming in July, as usual...

I get the benefit of the fan too, since I'm usually sprawled on the floor with Sophie. ;)

Mom: 3 tank tops, 2 dressier shirts, 2 versatile tees, a bra, sunglasses, 3 pairs of earrings, a 2-month supply of bunny chow, a year's supply of Tylenol, and a month's supply of Crystal Light for way under $200 at Wal-mart. Can't beat that with a stick. I try to ignore the sweatshop issues and the fact that 400-lb. women with 9 children apiece cannot possibly navigate 3-ft-wide aisles without totally pissing me off.

I think I'd vastly prefer an Australian winter over a Chicago summer (or any summer, for that matter). I'm holding up beautifully so far, but can I smilingly tolerate humidity and pigeon-sized mosquitoes for another 3-4 months? Time will tell. Some water and peppermint spritzes would be lovely.

Has not stopped raining, still bucketing down, temp up a bit.

If you kids learned ANYTHING from me, it's how to bargain shop!
I don't know; Wal-Mart is treating my cousin and your uncle pretty well. They get a lot more benefits than Dad and I could EVER hope for!
