In Kingston for the week, about a block from Lake Ontario. Gorgeous! Lots of cornflowers, sailboats, newborn ducks, and black squirrels. We'll probably take a ghost tour at Fort Henry later.
Somehow we survived a trek across the prairies in a Hyundai with two teenagers. "Retard. You're adopted. Just die. Don't touch me. This is the worst music ever." I realized how truly old I'm getting when Aaron complained that Demi's seat was tipped back a fraction of an inch too much for him to type comfortably on his laptop; I told him, "When I was Demi's age, I had a Sony Walkman on roadtrips. Not a Discman, a Walkman. And if your cassette tape upspooled and became too tangled to wind back up, you were screwed."
We spent a night and day in Chicago. I wanted to see some Henry Darger paintings at the Hammer Gallery, but of course it had to be closed for installation. Dammit. So we just walked to the Sears Tower, across one of those bridges with a really cool view that I think were in High Fidelity, when he's talking about the Top 5 best things about his girlfriend.
It was odd being in the States for so long (we drove through Wisconsin and Michigan, crossing the border at Sarnia). I'd forgotten all about mustard-flavored Gardetto's pretzels and Grandma's soft cookies! I even cheated a little and had a Watchamacalit.

If you read this before you leave Kinston call me. I left my number on your facebook page. A note from me will be waiting with my phone number. I wish I had known you guys were coming through WI on your way through. You could have stopped. We are only minutes off the highway. Well maybe you can come back this way and spend an hour with us. Even if J isnt home I would love to see you again. Please ask Doug if you could come back this way. Come through Milwaukee and we are only a few minutes off the highway when you get to our exit. Talk to him and see about calling me though. That would be fun. Talk later. N.
Ah, Kingston. Never been there, but I hear it's nice. My mom lives there now, actually, and really likes it. Safe driving, eh?
We might be going back the same way we came, so that would be cool. We were kind of hauling ass to Chicago so we could make it to Kingston in decent time; we didn't stop anywhere at all aside from maybe 2 rest stops. But we won't be in a mad rush on the way back.
Kingston is fabulous. Pretty, historic, clean. Lots to do. Today we're going to a street performers' festival downtown and perhaps taking a cruise.
Great to see teen-agers are saying the same things we used to say. Retard, just die, you're adopted. Great stuff. Do they do "this is you?"
Dem and Aaron always say "This is you", and they can imitate each other perfectly so it's very effective. They also say, "I know you are". ;D
Ah, youth. I'm so freakin' glad I don't have to relive it.
I don't know. It seems to me that YOUR brother called you "hippie"....several times. The sandals were the clincher. ;)
LOL.. I am actually laughing out loud at those last few comments here. I feel for you really do. But I dont have to worry about that for another few years yet for when we travel.... Hope you are having loads of fun though. Dont rush back.
Have a lovely time! It is a pretty place.
Not sure I'd say that about Chicago, tho lol!
HEY! Chicago is awesome! Sure, like any large city it has its ugly areas. But there's certainly a lot to love.
If you actually spend some time in Chicago on your way back, let me know and maybe we can meet up...
We all adored Chicago (and I usually hate big cities - too crowded, too dirty, too polluted)! I would love to pass through again, to check for Darger paintings, so I'll let ya know.
