Stuff

I don't know how much longer my blog, and all other Canadian blogs, will be available. There are rumours that my provider, Telus, as well as Rogers and Bell Canada are planning to institute a cable TV-like plan whereby I will only be allowed to visit certain websites (and I will have to sign up and pay for them in advance - no browsing without extra fees being levied). If these rumours are untrue, the people knowingly spreading them should be ashamed of themselves (and shut the hell up), but if they're true I will no longer be able to afford being online, and my research into things like the residential school issues and anti-occult hysteria will effectively come to end. I have heard many such end-of-the-Internet rumours before, but this one seems to have more weight. None of the service providers named have issued denials, for one thing. I'm going to go to Telus tomorrow and see what they have to say; I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, the blogging continues.

Things I've Discovered This Week:

- My rabbit is afraid of tapioca. If you hold a spoonful of it towards her, she shudders from her ears to her tail and hops away really fast.
- The Dark Knight isn't half as bad as Batman Forever (thank you Katie Holmes, for not getting rehired!). But Christian Bale's Batman voice is pathetic.
- Yogi Tea's Green Tea Kombucha is delicious!! It's lightly minty and fruity at the same time, without one taste overpowering the other. Awesome awesome awesome.
- While reading Plath & Hughes bios this month, I was ambivalent towards Ted Hughes. The book that changed my mind wasn't even about him or Plath, but about Plath biographers (The Silent Woman by Janet Malcolm), and it chronicled how Hughes and his sister went out of their way to manipulate writers into taking their side, using intimidation and guilt to suppress icky information. Now I think he was an utter creep and can go f*** himself sideways with a pointy stick.

This is the first of this rumour I've ever heard...I'll have to check out my techie sources and see what they have to say...

Bale's Batman voice got really grating, didn't it? I'd forgotten all about it until you mentioned it here. What did you think of the Joker, though?

I was writing a reply when my laptop suddenly started typing in Mandarin and I had to restart it. Scary.

Anyway, yeah, Bale has gotta work on that voice...
The Joker was great. Almost too scary for a comic book villain! I don't know if the performance was quite Oscar-caliber, but as far as summer blockbusters go it was above and beyond anything in recent memory.

Still not sold on seeing the latest Batman - I don't think I've seen one since Batman and Robin (hmmm, wonder why?).

As for this website/fee thingy...Telus, Rogers, etc. would be out of their minds to try something like this. Look at the backlash about the cost of the iPhone plans! I can't see the government going ahead and agreeing to let them do this. isn't there some sort of rights and freedoms violation there? My god, we'd turn into China if they were allowed things like that.

"But Christian Bale's Batman voice is pathetic."

I agree. I couldn't help but giggle at one point because it started to remind me of Homer Simpson's not quite whispering voice.

That sucks about the tubes. Here I thought the internet was a democratizing tool. What purpose would it serve to do such a thing?

Ok... wait... I can't help but notice people comparing Dark Knight with previous movies.

Batman Forever & Batman and Robin - TOTALLY different directors, actors, and producers than this new set of films (Begins and Dark Knight). That would be like comparing Superman to Superman Returns. These are nothing like either Tim Burton's original two films (which I still like) and the horrible sequels to those.

I refuse to drink Kombucha Tea unless it comes out of a musky jar and out in the Russian town of Kargasok, the source of its second most famous name "Kargasok Tea". Anyway, that's where I had it sometime between its once every 2 decades fad sweep.

Maybe you could scatter tapioca in all the places you don't want Sophie to go? I wouldn't recommend trying this on the couch though. ;)

Cool, Karen, thanks for that link - I'll probably post about this at Swallowing the Camel. Telus told me more or less the same thing (they've been getting a lot of complaints this week).

OMG, Laura, you're right! Christian Bale's Batman voice = Homer's whispering voice! I knew it reminded me of something.
It's hard not to compare and contrast with the earlier Batman movies, but of course they are totally different and meant to be that way. I think they can all be appreciated on different levels; the earlier ones for their camp and style, the recent ones for their special effects and...and...
I'll think of something....

Thanks for the info, SME, I hadn't heard about this either. But if it's true, I'll do what you're doing, ditch the whole thing (and Bell along with it).

Wonder why Sophie's afraid of tapioca? Is there an ingredient there that we don't know about?

Turns out Telus did issue a denial of sorts (see the link Karen posted). The 'net is safe for another day. ;)

I don't know exactly what's in tapioca, but if it scares small animals I ain't touchin' it!
