It Begins.
This is the first trailer for Martin Scorsese's upcoming film Shutter Island. Looks pretty good, doesn't it? Scorsese. DiCaprio. Ben Kingsley. Von Sydow. An insane asylum. And it's based on a novel by Dennis Lehane, the same guy who wrote Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone. How could you possibly go wrong with this one?
If only you knew. I encourage you to check out my review of the novel at The Bookworm Collective blog, but I realize that few will heed my warnings. The rest will be lured into theatre seats by the Scorsese siren call, only to be lashed by the storms of mediocre entertainment, then dashed against the rocks of bitter disappointment. While you flail and splutter in the surf, trying to find any handhold in a sea of duuuuuh, Scorsese will be sitting atop of mountains of gold coins in a vault somewhere, laughing at you.
Go ahead. Pay your $10-$13, plus popcorn and a drink, to be laughed at. But never say I didn't try to save you from your fate!
I will skip this one. We went and seen Drag me to Hell Saturday. That was a good movie. If you like horror/thriller type stuff it was good.I usually dont but this one was different.
Thanks for the warning. I have to admit though Scorsese does a good job of making it look good. While I'm not a big fan of his or Di Caprio's, it's going to be hard to skip a movie that features two of my all time favourite actors: Ghandi and Ming the Merciless. Oh...wait...I mean Kingsley and von Sydow. Yeah, that's it.
I'm kinda tempted by Drag Me to Hell. I like a good horror movie once in a while, and I haven't seen one for ages.
Sadly, Ghandi was in another one of the Worst Movies Ever: Photographing Fairies. Whoever wrote and/or directed it took a hilarious, charming, touching, made-for-the-screen novel and turned it into two hours of entertainment hell. But Von Sydow, well...this might be the first time I've ever been disappointed in him. It's a sad day.
Oh my God. On the one hand, this looks like a great movie with all kinds of good juice to it, but on the other it hits a little close to home for me. I have a hard time watching psychiatric "treatments" portrayed in film or TV. ECT did a number on me. BUT, I love Ben Kingsley. I doubt I'd see this in the theatre (nothing good ever comes here anyway) but I might rent it and close my eyes during the icky parts.
WC, the icky part would be the entire ending of the film. I started to get a bad feeling about 20 pages from the end of the novel, when I realized, "Man, he's got a lot of loose threads to wrap up here. This isn't going anywhere." And then it went somewhere. Somewhere retarded.
I've been a big Lehane fan since his first books and just finished 'The Given Day', which was Really good. Shutter Island, on the other hand was a book I wish somebody else had written and then faded into obscurity along with the novel. I like to just pretend I never read it and Dennis Lehane didn't write it, and I'm just fine with that. You couldn't pay me to see the movie, even though I like a lot of Scorses's films.
I like Scorcese, but hated Mystic River with a passion. I have the DVD unfortunately because it was free with another DVD I actually wanted so I watched it and hated it.

Thanks for the review.
I don't imagine that I would have gone rushing out to see this, and this cinches it. Thanks for the heads up.

Drag Me to Hell is scary and loud. More loud than scary but good... check it out sometime.
I'll probably pay the money (I follow the Scorsese siren song) and go see it and then I'll come back here and tell you, you were right.

Yeah, denial would be a good thing in this case. "It never happened. Never saw it, never read it. It was never written. La la la la la."
