Driving across the Canadian prairies gives you a lot of time not just to think, but to listen to a lot of really bad talk radio. (These two activities are mutually exclusive.)
For nearly an hour we listened to Matt Drudge muttering about something he seems to think is the end of civilization as we know it: Chris Rock hosting the Academy Awards. Rock doesn't like the Academy Awards. He makes fun of the Academy Awards. He doesn't put any stock in the Academy Awards. So what does this mean for the Oscars? Well, it means that Chris Rock is really smart and the ceremony organizers are really stupid. Huge shock. Like we should expect anything from a group that overlooks a meticulously staged Passion play (in Aramaic, no less) in favor of a buddy movie starring the guy who used to play the airport mechanic on Wings.
I stopped watching the Academy Awards the exact second that Gwyneth Paltrow won Best Actress for Shakespeare in Love (with nominee Emily Watson sitting in the audience). Gwyneth Paltrow is slightly less intriguing and gifted than a stalk of celery. I thought Shakespeare in Love was written by the National Lampoon guys. Seriously, I did.
I like Chris Rock. I hate the Oscars. It's a match made in heaven.
