Favourite Blogs and a Favourite Song

I've added some links to the sidebar, namely groovy blogs and a list of current reads.

My favourite song lately is "Coyotes" (played at the end of Grizzly Man); the end always chokes me up. Here are the lyrics.

Coyotes
Lyrics by Bob McDill, sung by Don Edwards

Was a cowboy I knew in south Texas
His face was burnt deep by the sun
Part history, part sage, part mesquit
He was there when Poncho Villa was young.
And he'd tell you a tale of the old days
When the country was wild all around
Sit out under the stars of the Milky Way
And listen while the coyotes howl.

Chorus

And they go... poo yip poo yip poopoodi hoo di yip poo
di yip poopoo yip poo yip poopoo
di hoo di yip poo di yip poo

Now the long horns are gone
And the drovers are gone
The Comanches are gone
And the outlaws are gone
Geronimo's gone
And Sam Bass is gone
And the lion is gone
And the Red Wolf is gone.

Well he cursed all the roads and the oil men
And he cursed the automobile
Said this is no place for an hombre like I am
In this new world of asphalt and steel.
Then he'd look off some place in the distance
At something only he could see
He'd say all that's left now of the old days
These damned old coyotes and me.

[Chorus]

Now the long horns are gone
And the drovers are gone
The Comanches are gone
And the outlaws are gone
Now Quantro is gone
Stan Watee is gone
And lion is gone
And the Red Wolf is gone.

One morning they searched his adobe
He disappeared without even a word
But that night as the moon crossed the mountain
One more coyote was heard.

And he'd go poo yip poo yip poopoodi hoo di yip poo
di yip poopoo yip poo yip poopoo di hoo di yip poo di yip poo
poo yip poo yip poopoodi hoo di yip poo di yip poo
poo yip poo yip poopoo di hoo di yip poo di yip poo

I love that song. I found the movie really powerful, too, for so many reasons but I was really stuck with that song in my head at then of it. Nice choice.

I think Grizzly Man was snubbed by the Academy. ;(

Absolutely; I'm not sure why. They seem to be very odd in choosing documentaries- i know it was a tough story for people, and TimTreadwell is unique-to say the least- but I think a great piece of film making and quite thought provoking. He remonded me of my ex, and so many people I meet in my business: the wannabes, those despaerate for fame and attention coupled with a profounds sense of lonliness or of being lost; addiction toois huge. I think everyone should see it.
So there!

I think for a lot of people it was just a crazy guy with a camera, but I too saw a lot of the hunger for fame and attention - the desire to have a purpose and to make your mark - and also a disturbing exploration of the fragile relationship we all have to nature. There's so much food for thought there! Dang the Academy!

Vancouver Voyeur said that Treadwell transferred his addiction to drugs to addiction to danger. Makes sense.

Definitely! He had to live on the edge, one way or another. Personally I would have stayed with the drugs... ;P
