It's an unusual year for me because I've actually seen most of the movies nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. The only exceptions are Good Night and Good Luck and Munich, but I plan to see them both next week (along with Matchpoint).
Richard's hands-down favourite was Crash - he's been rooting for it for months. But Brokeback Mountain will undoubtedly win, and he's OK with that. He pointed out that everyone seems to accept Capote, because Capote neatly fit every stereotype of the gay man, but the dudes in Brokeback are just your average Joe Six-Packs and that spooks everybody. Also it was mostly filmed in Alberta; there's a shot of Rundel Mountain.
I think/hope Philip Seymore-Hoffmann will get Best Actor; my dad, who has a solid record of picking Oscar winners, thinks the guy from Good Night and Good Luck will take it. We'll see.
As usual, my favourite documentary of the year (Grizzly Man) wasn't even nominated. I actually haven't had any respect for the Academy Awards since that dismal night that Gwyneth Paltrow took Best Actress for I Shagged Shakespeare. (Emily Watson should have won for Hilary and Jackie.) But I actually enjoyed all the films that are in the running this year and will probably watch just for the heck of it.

And Mom will fall asleep in the middle, as usual. ;)
I do an Oscar Party every year where we all dress up as various characters from that year's movies. Unfortunatley--I didn't see anything this last year (had a baby) so I guess we won't be dressing up. Maybe we'll just dress up pretty instead.
I love the Oscars!
I think the Oscars will be pretty close to the Golden Globes this year. Look for Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon for best actor/actress. 2004 was such an outstanding year fr movies, 2005 seems like a real bust in comparison.
Sadie - Wow, you really get into it! I'd go for cowboy outfits, or maybe just white makeup (The Corpse Bride).
GWB - I definitely saw some good movies in '04, but I can't remember what was nominated for Oscars...
I think Brokeback will be the big winner, sweeping most categories, but I'd love to see Witherspoon & Pheonix win instead, just 'cause I love the Cashes.
I saw all the movies you mentioned except Capote. I think Munich had the best acting, I think Syriana (did you mention that one) had the best script, and Grizzly Man was so sad and disturbing all at once. Everyone already knows I found the storyline sadly lacking for Brokeback Mountain. I think key parts of the story wound up on the cutting room floor. Oh, maybe it will redeem itself on DVD.
I've seen everything but Munich, and I loved Good Night and Good Luck. I think Hoffman will take it, although I think Heath Ledger had a tougher journey from an actor's p.o.v.; I agree with your dad about David Strathairn possibly sneaking in there- I have a huge love for him- check him out in all the John Sayles films.
tried earlier but it didnt post...changing actor pick to Hoffman for Capote. gut feeling even tho the other guy was really good...Dad
Well, I'm with ya there! Anyone who could tolerate playing Capote deserves an Oscar.
supporting actor? Clooney
best actress..tough to predict, probably Judi Dench with Witherspoon a longer shot.
Picture?..probably Brokeback, but if too many people are uncomfortable (like Richard says )then it'll go to Capote, cos people accept that.
I would guess Judi Dench, but I'm hoping for Reese Witherspoon.
