Not so springy

Not the greatest week. The usual springtime depression hit me a few weeks ago and is letting up only very, very gradually.

On the up side, Richard gave me a fabulous anniversary present - a Brompton folding bike. I haven't had a bike in years. It's nice. I haven't got the hang of folding and unfolding it quickly yet; given how klutzy I am, that'll take a lot of practice.

On the down side, my grandpa went in for surgery Monday morning. His cancer spread. Extremely stressful for my grandma. The prospect of losing him is unbearable for her; she spent 17 years of her life unmarried, and more than 60 of them married. They're more or less inseparable. At times like this it's difficult living 1500+ miles away.

I've developed a bad habit: Grinding my teeth. I've never done it in my life, so I don't know why it's starting now. It's awful; gives me headaches, and most of the time I don't even realize I've been doing it until the headaches and jaw-aches set in.

Spring depression is the worst. It's hit me, too. It seems so unnatural to me.

Not fair, is it? Everyone is so jazzed this time of year.

Get a wooden pencil (I actually use two rubber erasers), and put the pencil as far back in your mouth as you can sideways. Bite down hard for 10-15 seconds, then release for 10-15 seconds, repeat until the tension in your jaw starts to let up. Best trick I ever learned for grinding my teeth.

I'm so sorry about your grandpa. I hope he's okay.

I am experiencing a 17 day headache.
An anon caller suggested - presumably from Nth Am that someone is sticking pins into my effigy. Do you still do that weird stuff over there? Reply pl.

Sad to hear about your Grandfathers terrible problem, to live the last of one's twilight years in pain, is no reward for a life of giving.

I'll try that Courtney, thanks. Sounds extreme, but anything's better than wearing my teeth down to nubs, right?

Thanks, sp. He had a minor heart attack and is having some issues with his breathing now. I may be heading home to spend some time with my grandmother.
