100 Songs Meme

I got this one from my mom, who got it from Suldog. Pretty fun!

Here's what you do:
A) Go to Music Outfitters.
B) In the search function, enter the year you graduated from high school. Get the list of the 100 most popular songs of that year.
C) Bold the songs you like, strike through the ones you hate, and underline or italicize your favorite. Do nothing to those you don’t remember or don’t care about

My comments are in blue.

I couldn't really recall many of the hit songs of '96, so I was disappointed to learn it was a very good year for mediocre hiphop, generic post-grunge bands, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion. Not to mention my least favourite band in the history of the planet, Hootie and the Blowfish. Those guys were so out of it on beer and ESPN that they couldn't be bothered to change key. A lot of these groups were one-hit wonders that I've completely erased from my memory. In other words, it was a really bad year for pop music.

The Top 100 Songs of 1996:
1. Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix), Los Del Rio (it was a lot less annoying then than it is now!)
2. One Sweet Day, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men
3. Because You Loved Me, Celine Dion (crappy song from a crappy movie)
4. Nobody Knows, Tony Rich Project
5. Always Be My Baby, Mariah Carey
6. Give Me One Reason, Tracy Chapman
7. Tha Crossroads, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony
8. I Love You Always Forever, Donna Lewis (I hate this song, always forever!!)
9. You're Makin' Me High/Let It Flow, Toni Braxton (cool video, too)
10. Twisted, Keith Sweat
11. C'mon N' Ride It (The Train), Quad City DJs (hellishly annoying)
12. Missing, Everything But The Girl
13. Ironic, Alanis Morissette (not bad at the time, but now I'm just irritated when people misuse "ironic")
14. Exhale (Shoop Shoop), Whitney Houston
15. Follow You Down/Til I Hear It From You, Gin Blossoms (If there's a hell, the Gin Blossoms will be there.)
16. Sittin' Up In My Room, Brandy
17. How Do U Want It/California Love, 2Pac
18. It's All Coming Back To Me Now, Celine Dion (It's coming back to me, too. And I think I'm gonna be sick.)
19. Change The World, Eric Clapton
20. Hey Lover, LL Cool J
21. Loungin, LL Cool J
22. Insensitive, Jann Arden (didn't like it at the time, but Ms. Arden has grown on me)
23. Be My Lover, La Bouche
24. Name, Goo Goo Dolls
25. Who Will Save Your Soul, Jewel (first of the breathy waifs who set their weird-ass junior high poetry to some bland accoustic guitar and passed it off as art. Damn her.)
26. Where Do You Go, No Mercy ("No Mercy" is right.)
27. I Can't Sleep Baby (If I), R. Kelly (If I wanna listen to pedophiles, I'll become a Catholic. Okay, that was low. But I'm not takin' it back.)
28. Counting Blue Cars, Dishwalla
29. You Learn/You Oughta Know, Alanis Morissette (Folks have issues with "angry songs", but I think anyone on the planet can relate to You Oughta Know. We all might as well just admit it.)

31. Wonder, Natalie Merchant
32. Not Gon' Cry, Mary J. Blige
33. Gangsta's Paradise, Coolio

36. You're The One, SWV
37. Sweet Dreams, La Bouche
38. Before You Walk Out Of My Life/Like This And Like That, Monica

62. Fastlove, George Michael
63. Touch Me Tease Me, Case Featuring Foxxy Brown
64. Tonite's Tha Night, Kris Kross (I think this was a pre-teen duo. Probably in rehab and/or jail by now, with the rest of the exploited child stars...)

66. Theme From Mission: Impossible, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen
67. Closer To Free, Bodeans

72. Pony, Ginuwine ("Ginuwine"? Are you freaking kidding me?)
73. Nobody, Keith Sweat

100. Don't Cry, Seal

P.S. My apologies to Kriss Kross. According to Wikipedia, they're still recording and one of them owns his own label.

Man, you did get a horseshit year for music, didn't you. I don't remember you playing any of these songs.

The only songs I liked on the list were by...here it comes....wait for it...tada....Hootie and the Blowfish!

I have to admit I remember a few of these songs. I actually like La Bouche. I own the Cd with those two songs on it. But other than that I am not to fond of our year either...

Hootie in the Blowfish worse than Celine Dion? Tough call. I do think Alannis More Upset is one of the most annoying singers on the planet as well.

I hated that Metallica song. I was kind of excited to see Metallica had a new album out, thinking it couldn't possibly be as bad as the Black Album (yes, I hated that album), then it was even worse, much, much worse. Metallica should have changed their name to Alternativeca, or Wesoldoutca.

I do like that Tony Rich song. Yes, it did get overplayed though.

Oh, I agree, hated that Jewel song, except I'll admit that "You Were Meant for Me" and "Foolish Games" are both guilty pleasures of mine, even if her lyrics sound like they're written by a 12-year-old.

Those lyrics were written by a 12-year-old...

Metallica did seem to lose it around this time, and apparently they never got it back (tho I liked their cover of "Whiskey in a Jar").

I've been searching my brain for a day and I still can't remember who "Monica" is.

Hey, you can't go wrong with Gwen Stefani and Sheryl Crow. At least your year had some decent female artists. :-)
