Better Thursday: There Will Be Milkshakes

My mood is improved somewhat. Listening to poor Richard on the phone with his dad made me realize again that it's certainly not just my grandparents who are set in their ways and a bit inconsiderate in their old age. He doesn't want to hear a thing about Richard's activism, his walks, his videos, or anything else. "Can't you just talk about the weather?" Actual quote. "I think I fell asleep." Another actual quote. Dammit, I love these old people - but they can be so obnoxious sometimes.

I lucked into a bumper crop of good DVDs at the library tonight: The Last Wave (never seen it, though I really like Peter Weir), The Last Winter (Polar Gothic! Yay!), Longford (about "Moors Murderer" Myra Hindley, the Karla Homolka of 1960s Britain, and the man who inexplicably took up her cause), There Will Be Blood (I vowed to avoid this one because The Jungle was enough misery for one year, but after hearing Patton Oswalt's Daniel Plainview bit, I couldn't resist), Vera Drake (I've wanted to see this since it came out, and just never got around to it. Last week I saw the documentary Leona's Sister Gerri, the story behind a famous photo of the botched motel room abortion of a woman named Gerri Santoro. Very sad. Even people who aren't comfortable with abortion, like myself, couldn't watch this one without crying and being grateful that women don't have to go through this in every part of the world today). Even if these movies end up sucking, the performances could make them worthwhile. You've got Jim Broadbent as Lord Longford, Daniel Day-Lewis as a wacky oilman (as if Alberta doesn't already have enough of 'em to go around), and Imelda Staunton as someone other than a completely deranged Dark Arts instructor.

I probably won't watch all of these movies in their entirety, and I rarely watch watch movies anyway (I keep them on while I'm doing other stuff, and glance up at the interesting parts). But at least I have a good selection. I'll be sticking around the house tonight to keep an eye on Sophie, who's eating but still not feeling well. I think she's severely constipated or dealing with a hairball; despite eating her own weight in hay every few hours, she's not pooping.

I watched The Last Winter the other night. Not sure exactly how I felt about it - it was interesting, I watched the whole thing but I was "hmmm, Okaaaaaay" when it was over. Considering I dislike Ron Perlman with a passion, I was surprised I even bothered turning it on. Let me know what you think of it!

Didja watch There Will Be Blood yet? The rest of your family hated it. Just wondering if it's genetic. ;)

Haven't gotten to Last Winter or There Will be Blood Yet, but I'll post some reviews when I'm finished.
